- Fall 2010Team: Nastia Tumash, Nadya RodionenkoInstructor: Meredith DavisWith the democratization of technology and access to online publishing, everyone can become an author. When there are no filters for the credibility of content on the Web, we need to develop a new set of skills to be able to evaluate, analyze and sort the information. How can dynamic modeling and diagramming system contribute to the development of media literacy and critical thinking in the area of Web search? My design-partner Nastia Tumash and I work on a particular content area within the subject of English Language Arts, Grade 7. We concentrate on the visual part of ELA, which includes viewing and representing in response to both National and North Carolina State Standards, which state that the learner will synthesize and use information from a variety of sources, develop critical thinking skills and establish criteria to evaluate print and non-print materials.

- The system we propose is designed for both students and teachers, the latter playing the role of experts. Teachers create a framework for students’ learning activity and students respond to a particular assignment choosing and evaluating Web resources accordingly. Teachers can leave comments and provide feedback on the outcomes and guide the whole learning process. The technical components of the system include an online application and a browser plug-in, so that users can continuously switch between their profile in the system and the browser. A browser plug-in allows students to record those Web sites they find credible, it tracks the whole search path as well as the number of Web sites visited and the time spent on each one. These numbers are mostly important for a teacher, who can judge by them how students progress.
